Fairs, festivals and events
There are several key dates on the calendar of events that take place in the municipality of Baleira that are worthy of note:
12th OF EVERY MONTH
Baleira Monthly Fair
On the 12th of each month the Baleira holds its traditional fair in the heart of the municipality. Numerous stalls sell crafted products such as tools and other utensils, as well as clothing and footwear and traditional produce including vegetables, cured meats, cheese and honey.
12th AUGUST
O Cádavo Local Festival
On 12th August, Baleira celebrates the festivity of Saint Christopher, its patron saint. Following a mass in his honour, the statue of the saint is taken around the town in procession, and afterwards the locals celebrate with an aperitif accompanied by live music. The celebrations end with the popular music and dance session which goes on until the early hours of the morning.
FIRST SUNDAY IN AUGUST
Nature Festival
For several years now, a group of local residents, member of the Friends of A Marronda Association, have organised an annual festival to protect and promote the A Marronda forest mass. The numerous activities, which include talks and guided tours, are rounded off with a lunch served in A Cortevella recreation area, consisting of traditional regional fare such as pies, pork shoulder and the classic Galician-style octopus.
HOLY WEEK
Baleira Tapas Competition
Now in its third edition, local bars and restaurants take part in this tapas competition, presenting their finest culinary creations. The winner is chosen by popular vote: customers taste these mini delicacies and vote for their favourite tapa, which also entitles them to participate in the draw for a number of prizes.
FIRST WEEKEND IN NOVEMBER
Honey Festival
A festival dedicated to this highly-prized product that attracts honey producers from the mountains of Lugo. The packed programme of educational and leisure events targets both beekeepers and the general public alike. In addition to honey sales, the festival includes a range of activities for all ages, including educational exhibitions and workshops to produce traps for Asian hornets. Younger visitors will have fun making wax models, and there is also a competition for culinary creations featuring this product.
